A leading manufacturer of carbon products has been using TDR testing since 1994. At that time, TDR testing was used on 547 motors and signatures were obtained. The signatures were analyzed and the problem motors were taken out of service. Some of the motors were rewound and others were replaced. The motors that were taken out of service had the highest levels of inductive faults.

As noted on the chart, the company burned out 182 motors in 1992. After using TDR for 6 years, the number of burned out motors dropped below 100. The cost of their motors repair budget has dropped dramatically ($50,000 in 1999), and their down time costs due to premature motor failure has dropped significantly. Another benefit is that plant efficiency has risen from 94.4% to 97.7% during this period.
